Topic: Wire-free continuous respiratory monitoring using functional bed sheet
Studio 1 Labs has developed fabric sensor technology into an intelligent bed sheet to help health-care practitioners remotely monitor patient vital signs in real-time. Non-obstructive nature of the technology means eliminating any wires or attachments to the body, and allows Studio 1 Labs to implement patient-monitoring in different environments such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, and homes with minimal discomfort to patients. The variable sensitivity of the sensor provides a wide variety of the signals, and helps to monitor patient’s movements, location, respiration, and heart rate. These signals can be streamed to the cloud and displayed onto the dashboard of a web or mobile application for a nurse or a doctor anywhere. In order to improve technology and make the intelligent bed sheet, Studio 1 Labs established partnerships with SOSCIP Smart Computing for Innovation and IBM for access to high powered computing resources, and a collaboration with University of Waterloo with the aim of developing an algorithm for sleep apnea detection. Patients with sleep apnea have increased risk of high blood pressure, myocardial infarction and stroke, therefore monitoring of patient’s health can be a decisive factor in longevity of healthy living. While traditionally, sleep disorders are diagnosed in a sleep laboratory settings with many devices attached to a patient, Studio 1 Labs can provide a sleep disorders detections in a comfortable home environment with non-invasive, zero-effort and ‘wire-free’ technology. In order to develop an algorithm for sleep apnea detection, we are pre-training algorithms on a publicly available large clinical dataset and then transferring obtained knowledge to signals from Studio 1 Labs’ intelligent bed sheet sensors that are obtained during clinical trials with self-diagnosed sleep apnea individuals. With intelligent bed sheet patient monitoring technology, Studio 1 Labs will improve patient lives and revolutionize the healthcare marketplace.

Yevgeniy is a SOSCIP – TalentEdge postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo working on the application of deep learning algorithms for analysis of the vital sign signals.
